How to read a BaZi chart: one worked Day Master and Ten Gods example
Follow a fictional Shanghai chart from verified birth inputs to Yi Wood, visible and hidden Ten Gods, and its Luck Pillar start. Locate each field before interpreting it, and keep uncertain birth times incomplete.
Start with the Day Pillar's stem. After checking the birth input and time convention, use that Day Master to identify Ten Gods, separate hidden stems from visible stems, and read the Luck start and decade table as different fields. This example has Yi Wood as its Day Master; it is fictional practice data, not a customer case.

The practice input is male, 1 January 2026 at 08:00, Shanghai, 121.5°E. It is invented teaching data, not a person's disclosed birth record. The current calculator treats its clock input as UTC+8 and applies a six-minute longitude correction, returning 08:06.
This correction does not include the equation of time or automatically resolve historical overseas time zones and daylight saving. If the birth time is unknown, keep dependent fields unavailable; a default time is not evidence for a complete chart.

The day stem is your comparison reference
In 乙亥, Yi 乙 is the day stem and Hai 亥 is the day branch. Ten Gods describe how another stem relates to Yi through element generation, control and polarity. The visible year stem is also Yi, so its relation is Peer, 比肩.
The Day Master is neither the annual zodiac nor Na Yin. This example has a Snake year and Mountain-top Fire as the Day Pillar's Na Yin, while its Day Master remains Yi Wood. Keep those three naming systems distinct.
Read visible stems and hidden stems separately
For Yi Wood, the visible month stem Wu 戊 is Direct Wealth and the hour stem Geng 庚 is Direct Officer. These are calculated relation labels, not proof of income, a job title or future success. Their positions and surrounding structure still matter in traditional interpretation.
The Hai day branch contains Ren 壬 and Jia 甲, which are Direct Resource and Rob Wealth relative to Yi. Chen 辰 contains Wu, Yi and Gui: Direct Wealth, Peer and Indirect Resource. A hidden occurrence is not interchangeable with the same stem visible at the top of a pillar.

Keep the natal chart and Luck timing in different layers
For this input the canonical output is 8 years, 4 months and 15 days until Luck begins, a start date of 16 May 2034, and a first decade row labelled ages 9–18, Ding Hai 丁亥. Exact elapsed duration, calendar date and integer table band are not the same field.
A decade or annual layer should be labelled with its date before being compared with the natal pillars. A traditional timing coordinate does not prove that an event will occur on the start date. An uncertain birth time cannot support this exact residual-month-and-day calculation.

On the first pass, locate your day stem and identify one visible Ten God. On the next pass, open a branch's hidden stems. Only after those are clear should you compare the start date with a decade row. Each task has an answer you can point to on the chart.

It is the Day Pillar's heavenly stem. In Yi Hai 乙亥, Yi Wood is the Day Master and Hai is the day branch.
Does Direct Wealth mean a guaranteed salary?
No. It is an element-and-polarity relation to the Day Master, not a verified financial fact or prediction.
Can I use this reading order without a birth time?
You can study confirmed fields, but do not invent an hour pillar, full-chart strength or an exact Luck start. Date boundaries may also leave more than one candidate.
